(Layton-AP) -- About a dozen Layton residents were homeless after a New Year's Day fire burned their apartment building.
Investigators say the early morning fire is suspicious. It appeared to originate from a vehicle under a carport.
The residents of the four apartments were quickly evacuated, and no one was injured.
Residents told police they heard an explosion resembling a firecracker moments before the car became engulfed in flames. The fire quickly spread to four other cars before ripping through the carport and igniting the apartment complex.
