(Salt Lake City-AP) -- A Utah House panel endorsed a measure to send more money to the Children's Health Insurance Program from the state's tobacco settlement fund today.
House Bill 72, sponsored by Representative David L. Hogue, of Riverton, would increase the appropriation to $7 million from $5 million a year.
The Health and Human Services Committee sent the bill to the full House for a vote.
CHIP provides health coverage for about 27,000 Utah children of low-income parents who aren't poor enough to qualify for Medicaid but can't afford private health insurance.
The state contributes 20 percent and the federal government 80 percent to the cost of the program.
