(Salt Lake City, KSL News) -- A 33-year-old woman is in the hospital tonight after being stabbed for no apparent reason.

The woman was crossing the street near 300 South and 140 East when a man suddenly plunged a knife into her leg.

This is a pretty frightening incident that happened, and police are especially concerned because it appears the attack was totally unprovoked.

Police say the victim and the suspect were crossing the street at the same time. At some point they made eye contact. After that, the suspect began to follow the victim and suddenly jabbed her right thigh with a knife.

That was at about 140 East and 300 South. The man continued to walk away. A witness tried to follow him and lost track of the man.

Here's a description of the suspect:

He is a white male, possibly a transient, about 5'5", 150 lbs. in his 30s with light brown hair. He is said to be wearing a cream-colored jacket, Levis and white tennis shoes.

Police need your help. Right now they don't have a motive for this attack. If you have any information, you're asked to call the Salt Lake City Police Department.

The victim is in fair condition.
