Tonya Papanikolas ReportingA skier has disappeared in Big Cottonwood Canyon's backcountry. He's from Sweden but once lived in Utah.

Three skiers from Sweden went skiing in the backcountry of Big Cottonwood Canyon this morning around 9:00. They were in the Butler's Fork area. They skied together for a while but decided to split up.

They were supposed to meet up about 4 p.m. When the other two skiers arrived, the third was missing. He never showed up.

Search and Rescue is assuming the 39-year-old man is stuck on a hill somewhere. They've been searching with a helicopter equipped with infrared. High avalanche danger is stalling the ground search.

The man had an avalanche beacon but no light, and when rescuers try to call his cell phone, it goes directly to voicemail.

The man is from Sweden. He attended the University of Utah for a while and was moderately familiar with the terrain.
