(Sandy, KSL News)-- Alta High School had plenty to celebrate this morning after their boys basketball team won the 5A State championship Saturday night.
The team won, despite losing their head coach who was called up to active duty six weeks ago. And today, the studentbody thought they were honoring him in his absence.
Even the players were surprised to see Coach Tony Cannon come strolling across the gym floor. Cannon is stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs but was allowed a few days leave to come congratulate his team in person on Saturday's championship win.
Tony Cannon/Alta Basketball Coach - "I WAS LISTENING TO THE BYU GAME SATURDAY NIGHT AND AT HALFTIME THEY ANNOUNCED THE FIRST QUARTER SCORE, WHICH WAS 16 TO 9 FOR JORDAN, SO I DROVE AROUND COLORADO SPRINGS FOR TWO HOURS JUST A NERVOUS WRECK."
Coach Cannon returns to active duty later this week.
