OGDEN, Utah (AP) A man killed his girlfriend's 15-year-old daughter and then himself following an argument over the child's poor performance in school, Weber County sheriff's officers said.

Angela Joseph died at the scene. Rio Patrick Williams, 28, was taken by Life Flight to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden and died later, according to Lt. Klint Anderson of the Weber County Sheriff's Office.

The mother, Pat Yazzie, 39, was not hurt.

The shootings occurred at the Skyline Trail Head campground at the top of the North Ogden Divide about 5 p.m. Thursday, sheriff's Lt. Donny Archuletta said.

"The mother said they were just out for a drive along the divide," Archuletta said. "There was never any arguing during the drive. Nothing negative happened until he parked the car."

Yazzie told police that her boyfriend, Williams, got out of the car, walked to the passenger side, pulled a 9mm gun from the waistband of his pants and fired one shot into the hillside. He then turned and fired once into the back seat of the car where Angela sat.

The shot missed the girl. She got out of the car, and Yazzie yelled at the man to stop but he kept firing at Angela.

Detectives believe eight to 12 shots were fired, most of them hitting the girl.

The mother then ran toward the road to seek help from two passers-by and eventually a Utah Highway Patrol trooper on routine patrol.

It was then that the man turned the gun on himself.
