SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Four people died and a woman was in critical condition after two separate shootings Sunday.
Two men stationed at Hill Air Force Base died around 6:30 a.m. at a Layton apartment building in what police believed was a domestic quarrel between the shooter, Steven Richardson, and his estranged wife, Shawnti Richardson.
Police say Steven Richardson shot his way into the apartment of Brian Washington, and shot Shawnti Richardson, Washington, then himself.
The two men were pronounced dead at the scene. Shawnti Richardson was flown to University of Utah Hospital, where she was in critical condition Sunday night, Layton Police Lt. Quinn Moyes said.
Officers were called to the apartment around 5 a.m. because Steven Richardson kept calling his wife's cell phone and was trying to get into the apartment. Officers warned him to go away because she didn't want to speak with him, and he cooperated, Moyes said.
Because Richardson had done nothing more than call the cell phone and knock on the door, police had no reason to arrest him, Moyes said.
The Richardsons were going through a divorce, which had not been finalized. Moyes said officers were investigating what kind of relationship Shawnti Richardson had with Washington.
The second shooting happened around 11 a.m. Sunday one block away from the Salt Lake City Police station.
A 26-year-old man shot a 29-year-old woman, then turned the gun on himself, Salt Lake detective Dwayne Baird said. The two were from the area, but police were still trying to notify the families Sunday night.
The relationship between the man and woman was unclear. "There was no indication of an argument or anything whatsoever," Baird said. "That's all we have. We don't have much in the way of motive or indication as to what they were doing or anything."
