Shelley Osterloh reporting Police are searching for a man who robbed a Mountain America Credit Union on 12th South and Redwood Road.
This robbery could have been deadly because some people who saw the suspect, chased the guy for a while until he started shooting at them.
About ten this morning a robber walked into this Mountain America Credit Union demanding money.
Road construction workers saw the suspect go in said he looked like a tall thin black business man.
But as soon as he got in the bank, he put on a mask of a president, and pulled out a gun.
Det. Dwayne Baird, Salt Lake City Police: " HE WAS WEARING A CAUCASIAN TYPE HALLOWEEN STYLE MASK HAD A GUN OUT AS SOON AS HE CAME INTO THE BANK POINTED THE GUN AT THE EMPLOYEES OF THE BANK, AND AS HE WALKED UP HE WAS DEMANDING MONEY. "
Brigham Barlow, chased suspect: “THE LADIES COME RUNNING OUT OF THE BANK, PRETTY EXCITED SO WE TOOK OFF AFTER HIM, GOT TO HIM... GOT TO HIS CAR... I WAS ABOUT TO JUMP ON HIS CAR AND HE KIND OF WENT LIKE THIS.... DIDN'T SEE IF HE HAD GUN OR NOT, BUT HE KIND OF WENT LIKE THIS... SO I JUST GOT HIS LICENSE NUMBER AND BACKED OFF”
A Utah Department of Transportation inspector was in his truck as the suspect's dark Nissan Maxima sped out of the parking lot, so he followed for a few blocks into a nearby neighborhood where the suspect fired shots at him --- one striking right near his head just behind the side window.
That's when he stopped chasing the suspect.
Police are looking for a newer dark red or brown Nissan Maxima with stolen license plates: 817 MEN.
The suspect is described as tall -- 6- foot to 6' 3" --thin, African American, with very short hair, maybe bald.
Police say this robbery is not connected to another bank robbery this afternoon --- that one at a Wells Fargo on Foothill Blvd.
