(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Israel will award University of Utah geneticist Mario Capecchi its highest scientific award -- the Wolf Prize.

Capecchi will accept the prize May eleventh at a ceremony with the Israel minister of science.

The Israeli deputy consul general was in Utah yesterday to invite Capecchi to Israel for the ceremony.

Capecchi received the prize for his work with gene mutation and gene modification that allows researchers to develop models of diseases. Scientists are now better able to understand hypertension, diabetes and cancer.
