(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Police say that Nicholas Alan Triplett, who was two-and-a-half months old when he was taken from his mother at the Z-C-M-I Center, is in protective custody in California.

Three friends of Triplett's mother, Jennifer Triplett, allegedly took the infant in January because they thought Triplett was an unfit mother.

The case against those three had stalled because police had lost contact with Triplett. She then stopped by the Salt Lake Police department, where officers learned that Triplett no longer had custody of Nicholas.

Police say that at least two other children of Triplett's are in protective custody.
