(KSL TV/AP) Three employees of Stone Unlimited were trying to unload slabs of marble from a storage container Wednesday afternoon when the wooden dividers that separated the slabs gave way, said Fire Chief Steve Foote. The stone crashed down on two of the men.

It took 16 firefighters about 40 minutes to free the men.

"Several of the granite slabs had shifted in the trailor and trapped two people. One was trapped from the chest up and the other one was trapped where we could not see him," said South Salt Lake Batallion Chief Kent Robertson.

Firefighters wedged a hydraulic jack and the jaws of life under the slabs and deployed airbags before pushing the marble off of the men.

One man died on the scene and one was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A third man was treated for minor injuries.

The names were withheld pending notification of their families.
