Debbie Dujanovic reporting The Treasury Department is investigating a white powder found last night at the IRS facility near Ogden.
Work was shut down at the facility and several people were decontaminated while hazmat crews investigated.
It all began shortly before 9:00 last night. Workers at the IRS facility in Odgen found a suspicious substance spilling out of envelopes and immediately notified police.
Officers say that the workers are used to such scares, and that there was no panic when the substance was found in the mail sorting room.
Police quickly cordoned off the area and brought in hazmat crews, sending home some 46 employees working at the facility and decontaminating three of them.
None of those who came in contact with the subtance have had any adverse effects. The powder has been turned over to federal labs for tests, after tests performed at the scene came up inconclusive.
It could be several days until the results of those tests are back. Until that time, workers will be able to go about business as usual.
Police do not believe that the substance is anthrax, and think it most likely was sent by someone who just wanted to scare workers.
