Karen Scullin reporting The torrential downpours that hit the Salt Lake area Wednesday afternoon caught a lot of people off guard.

The room was prepped for new carpet. Instead, carpet crews are helping to drain the rain that came pouring in.

"I think it's terrible," says flood victim Lois Dee. "We just finished our basement off."

When the rain started coming down Wednesday afternoon, many areas around the Salt Lake Valley were quickly swamped.

Creeks were well beyond capacity.

And it was clearly going to be a long night for a lot of people, as they tried to save anything they could.

"We heard like a big boom noise, so right over there, as you can see, the window just parted from the yard and went on into the basement," explains Samantha John.

In her home, the water even crept up the stairs. In a new house, it was the last thing she expected.

Wednesday night, she was just trying to remember everything that's now underwater.

"Baby strollers, baby stuff, shoes, clothes, all kinds of stuff," she says.

Despite the problems some people faced beause of Wednesday's rain, we still need the moisture because of the drought.
