Sammy Linebaugh Reporting...The Deseret News is officially a morning paper. Afternoon editions were delivered for the last time today.

We caught up with sixteen-year-old Courtney Craig, a Viewmont High School student who's worked the same paper route for five and a half years. She says her 90-plus paper route has been the perfect part-time job.

As for the switch to early mornings, she says she plans to try it through the summer.

Courtney Craig, Newspaper Carrier: "AT FIRST I WAS LIKE, AH, NO, I DON'T WANT TO DO IT BUT MY PARENTS HELPED TALK ME INTO IT."

Jim Wall, Deseret News Publisher: "SINCE MARCH 31ST WE'VE HAD DOUBLE OR BETTER OUR SINGLE COPY CIRCULATION, WHICH IS WHERE WE WENT FIRST -- TO THE RACKS AND ALL THOSE LOCATIONS."

Publisher Jim Wall says so far, he's very pleased with public response to the move.

Historically, the paper's had about half the circulation of the Salt Lake Tribune at about 70- thousand readers.

And of course, there's a long history of legal wrangling that gets us to this point, with now two statewide morning newspapers. The switch certainly adds to the fierce competition that already exists between the papers.
