SALT LAKE CITY (AP/KSL TV) -- One person was killed and two injured in a LifeFlight helicopter crash Saturday night near Big Cottonwood Canyon.
The medical helicopter was headed toward Mount Olympus to rescue a hiker suffering from heat exhaustion, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Peggy Faulkner.
The helicopter turned around when the rescue operation was canceled, because the hiker was going to be transported by car. Shortly after, the pilot radioed that he planned an emergency landing. One person was killed in the landing, and two others slightly injured but in good condition, Faulkner said.
There were no patients in the helicopter, which crashed near 60th South and Wasatch Blvd. at about 8:15 p.m. A pilot, a paramedic and a nurse were on board. Faulkner declined to identify who was killed.
The helicopter was one of two remaining LifeFlight helicopters operated out of LDS Hospital. A third helicopter crashed, killing two, in January in dense fog near Interstate 80.
