(Undated-AP) -- A Utah doctor has been named president of the American Medical Association.
Doctor John C. Nelson, a Salt Lake City obstetrician and gynecologist, accepted the leadership position of the country's premier medical association at a ceremony on June 17. He is expected to become president of the organization next year.
Nelson was first elected to the A-M-A Board of Trustees in 1994, and re-elected for second and third terms in 1997 and 2001.
John Nelson says his father provided him with inspiration and an outstanding example of what it means to be a physician.
Nelson is the son of Dean S. Nelson, who received the first O-B/G-Y-N certification in Utah in 1952. He practiced in Ogden for 30 years.
As for today, Nelson says health car in Utah is "as good as it gets."
