HONOLULU (AP) -- A 70-year-old Utah woman who drowned off a Kauai beach on Thursday has been identified.

Kauai County police said Friday that Kathleen Stewart, of Manti, Utah, died after being pulled from the waters off Anini Beach.

County authorities say Stewart was snorkeling with her 73-year-old husband Thell Stewart when they were caught in a riptide. The couple tried to swim together out of it, but made no progress.

Authorities say Mr. Stewart told his wife to hold onto a channel marker about 75 feet from shore while he went for help. A bystander swam out to assist Mrs. Steward but found her face down in the water.

Resuscitation efforts at the beach were not successful, and she was pronounced dead.
