HURRICANE, Utah (AP) -- The Hurricane Police Department is getting federal stimulus money to deal with gangs.
The department will get a $147,000 grant in January to hire an additional officer for two years.
Police Chief Lynn Excell says gangs in the area are damaging property and causing problems at local schools. The department currently has 16 officers but none are solely dedicated to gangs.
The grant money will cover the officer's salary, benefits, equipment and vehicle.
