(Salt Lake City-AP) -- A Utah man who has at least 21 drunken driving convictions has been sent to prison for up to five years.

Prosecutors said Walter F. Downing, age 60, is a danger to the community.

Downing told the judge that he's given up his truck and drivers license and is trying to turn his life around.

But Judge Anthony Quinn sided with prosecutors and gave Downing a prison term of up to five years.

Downing's 21 D-U-I convictions stretch back 25 years. Prosecutors say there are holes in the state's record keeping system, and it can sometimes be hard to keep track of repeat D-U-I offenders.
