(KSL News) -- Six children and a mother escaped a house fire in Salt Lake County today.

LaRene Bautner was home with her five children and a niece when she smelled the smoke. About the same time, the smoke detector went off. But there still wasn't any visible sign of a fire.

LaRene Bautner: "The smoke detector goes off so I'm looking around and checking around and I actually shut it off and kept looking around. And a few minutes later it went off again, and my son comes running down the the stairs and says, 'Mother your closet is on fire.'"

Bautner ran to her room and saw flames coming from the closet. So she closed the closet door hoping to keep the fire from spreading. Then made sure all six children made it out of the house safely and called 911.

Authorities estimate damage at about 25-thousand dollars. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
