Shelley Osterloh Reporting Hopefully, we all know that today is Valentine's Day, the day we spend showing our loved ones how we feel. But when it comes to that special someone, what is it that makes our hearts skip a beat?

It's the day to buy chocolates and roses. It's the day to tell that special someone how you really feel. It's the day devoted to the four letter word, "Love." But, what makes people so attracted to their sweethearts?

Paul Schvaneveldt, Ph.D., Child & Family Studies, Weber State University: "There is a general pattern of wanting people who are healthy, intelligent, kind, caring, responsible, physically attractive..."

The list goes on, but when it comes right down to it...

Paul Schvaneveldt, Ph.D., Child & Family Studies, Weber State University: "The old saying 'healthy, wealthy and wise' I think is meaningful to many people."

Certain characteristics are important when searching for that one-and-only, but what advice is there for those who have already found that person and want to keep their relationship healthy?

Dr. Schvaneveldt: "It's valuable to know the other person and know yourself."

Dr. Schvaneveldt said it's the little things that matter, like sitting down with your partner at the end of the day to talk, or setting aside a night to go on a special date, and to be willing to work together and compromise.

Dr. Schvaneveldt said it's important to express your love on Valentine's Day. But more importantly, if you want a relationship to last, you need continue to show your love every day.
