(KSL News) -- Three people are in the hospital, after the backhoe they were riding slid off a narrow road up Emigration Canyon.

The driver and two workers were leaving a construction site along Brigham Fork Circle. The backhoe was being used to shuttle them up the hill to their cars. It got too close to the edge of the road and slid 30 feet into a ditch.

One person was flown to the hospital in serious condition. Two others were taken by ambulance with less serious injuries.

Capt. Fitzgerald Petersen/Salt Lake County Fire Dept.: "ABSOLUTELY LUCKY, ABSOLUTELY LUCKY. THE SIZE OF THAT PARTICULAR VEHICLE COULD HAVE DONE A LOT MORE DAMAGE THAN IT DID. IT'S MASSIVE."

The accident also caused a small grass fire, which crews put out quickly.
