Kimberly Houck reportingThe fire broke out in the attached garage of one of the homes at 850 South Pueblo Street and quickly spread.
Before it was put out, the blaze had burned two garages, parts of two homes and a duplex, two cars and a boat.
When fire crews arrived they found six separate fires burning in the area, and all dangerously close to spreading.
Numerous hazards complicated things.
Dennis McKone, Adm. Assistant, Salt Lake Fire Dept.: "We had several power lines that did come down, that were arcing."
The boat on fire in one of the yards was allowed to burn completely because officials say getting to it was too dangerous for crews.
One home was vacant at the time of the fire, and the residents of the other home have been allowed back in.
However, those who live in the duplex around the corner have been evacuated. And they're being taken care of by the Red Cross.
Investigators don't know what caused this fire.
But they are focusing behind the homes on Pueblo Street.
