SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The owners of a tire-recycling plant located in the middle of a Salt Lake City neighborhood want to move and are hoping to get some public money to do it.
A Senate committee has passed a bill that would help subsidize moving Tire Disposal and Recycling, which would mean a 25-cent fee hike on new tires across the state.
The bill, sponsored by Senator Fred Fife of Salt Lake City, would increase the state-imposed recycling fee on every new tire from $1 to $1.25 for 18 months.
The extra money --- estimated at $675,000 --- would have to then be matched by Salt Lake City or Salt Lake County to finance part of the move.
Plant owners say their business in a terrible location, and neighbors often complain of debris.
The measure now heads to the Senate for consideration.
