PROVO, Utah (AP) -- A European studies center funded by a $1.2 million federal grant has been opened at Brigham Young University.

The Center for the Study of Europe is the 11th center of its type in the country, said Wade Jacoby, director of the new center.

The center, which opened Thursday, will fund courses at BYU in European studies, faculty research, community outreach activities and international internships for undergraduates.

There will be seven annual fellowships, each providing $14,000 plus tuition, for students studying Europe and its languages.

The grant was specifically awarded to fund projects related to Western Europe, but Jacoby said the center will be allowed to use some of the funding to study Eastern European countries.

John B. Fowles, a law student at BYU and a recipient of one of the seven graduate fellowships, said the funding will help his studies of Danish and European Union law.

"I think it's fantastic," Fowles said of the center. "It's just odd to see BYU without a European studies program considering the large number of European language speakers."

Some 10,000 students and more than 150 faculty members at BYU speak a European language. About 500 European language courses and 500 non-language courses are offered at the university.

The Center for the Study of Europe will be housed in the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at BYU.
