SALT LAKE CITY -- Safety advocates Monday issued a progress report on toy safety.

Lead hazards sparked 85 toy recalls in 2008. This year, regulators have issued 15 recalls. They cite tougher port restrictions and stepped-up efforts to seize unsafe toys before they ever get to store shelves for the decrease.

To help consumers stay safe with the gifts they buy, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued the following safety checklist:

**Consumer Product Safety Commission's Top 5 safety checklist:** 1. ***Scooters and riding toys*** -- always buy a helmet. 2. ***Small balls or toys with small parts*** -- check appropriate age on packaging 3. ***Balloons*** -- deflated balloons pose suffocation risk to children under age 8 4. ***Magnets*** -- can be fatal if they detach from small toys and young children ingest them 5. ***Chargers and adapters*** -- require adult supervision
