(KSL News) The investigation continues this morning of mysterious fumes in the downtown Salt Lake City area.
Salt Lake City police, as well as the fire department and hazmat crews, were called out to 4th West and North Temple around 7:00 last night after receiving reports of a strange smell that seemed to be coming out of an underground opening to the City Creek Canyon.
The fumes apparently come and go, and right now authorities say it spells like turpentine or paint thinner. A similar smell was noticed around the State Fairpark, where the creek dumps into the Jordan River.
Dennis McKone/ Salt Lake City Fire Dept.: "At this point, all I can say is we're at a loss. We're going to research it. We've got the resources coming in to assist us and hopefully before long we'll determine what it is and where the source is."
Authorites blocked the area off just to be safe. But they don't think the fumes are dangerous.
