SALT LAKE CITY -- An early morning house fire threatened surrounding homes in a Salt Lake City neighborhood Saturday morning.

Officials said the fire broke out just after 5:00 a.m. at the home near 600 East and Hollywood Avenue. By the time crews arrived, smoke and flames were pouring from the building.

The woman who lived there was not home at the time. She was walking her two dogs on her regular newspaper delivery route.

Firefighters were able to stop the flames before they spread to neighboring homes, but the home was a complete loss.

The Red Cross helped the woman with food, clothing and shoes.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
