(Washington-AP) -- The Justice Department is seeking to dismiss the charges against the son of a powerful International Olympic Committee member.
The government had charged John Kim in 1999 with accepting a bogus job, arranged by Salt Lake City Olympic bid officials so that Kim could obtain a green card. He also was charged with lying to investigators.
The government alleged that it was all part of a massive effort by Salt Lake bidders to win the 2002 Winter Olympics.
A Justice Department official says that prosecutors have filed motions in federal courts in New York and Utah to dismiss the charges against Kim.
Kim has been held in Bulgaria while the Justice Department worked to return him to the United States for trial.
The Justice Department says that although the case could be pursued in court, it felt the punishment would not exceed the time he had already served.
