Before this season the Bingham Miners had lost to their rival Alta three straight times including the 2008 5A state championship and the 2007 semifinals. Last week they defeated the two time defending state champions for the 2nd time this season but they know that their work isn't done."It's time for us to get back to where we belong which is on top." Said Head Coach Dave Peck after the Miners semifinal win over Alta. "We have one more game to prove that we are the best team in the state."
The Miners have been ranked No. 1 in the state since knocking off Alta the first time in week two. They have backed up that ranking on the field with a roster stacked with talent. Running back Harvey Langi is the top college prospect among juniors in the state of Utah. The quarterback duo of Ty Hannay and Stefan Cantwell is working out well. The Miners also have dominated the line of scrimmage thanks to a very talented offensive and defensive line. They don't have many weaknesses, which is why they will be a heavy favorite on Friday to win their 2nd state title in the last 4 years.
Being an underdog is just fine for the Davis Darts. Head Coach Ryan Bishop knows the challenge his team is up against on Friday.
"I've seen enough of Bingham to know how good they are." Says Bishop. "They're the No. 1 team in the state for a reason."
The Darts may be underdogs but they have the talent to pull off the upset. Running back Tanner Hinds leads 5A in rushing yards with 1,888 and rushing touchdowns with 23. He is coming off a 187 yard, two-touchdown performance against Hunter in the semifinals. Bingham's tough defense will have their hands full trying to contain Hinds at the line of scrimmage.
The Darts also boast the best scoring defense in 5A holding their opponents to just 10 points per game.
