SALT LAKE CITY -- A group of young runners is warming up for their annual 5K race, and the public is invited to join them.

Girls on the Run is a program that builds endurance and self-esteem in third- to fifth-grade girls. It was started in North Carolina by Ironman triathlete Molly Barker and has spread across the country. In Utah, it's in six schools and serves more than 100 girls.

Earlier this month, KSL News tagged along at a practice at Mountain View Elementary School, where after-school programs are especially important.

"This school has the largest refugee population of any school in the state. Most of the students are English-language learners," said assistant coach Muffy Mead-Ferro.

Every practice starts with stretches, warms-ups and a lesson. Coaches focus on topics like avoiding drugs and alcohol, combating gossip and dealing with bullies. They tie the lessons into running.

"[We'll say,] if you agree with this strategy, run 50 yards to that cone as fast as you can," Mead-Ferro explained.

Coaches and running mentors help the girls during the long-distance run training. By completing the runs, they're teaching the girls how to set a goal, work toward it and complete it.

"I think they're really nice," said fifth-grader Lizzabetth Camacho.

"They help us out when we're tired and tell us to continue and never give up," added fifth-grader Jackie Rodriguez.

The culmination of the 12-week program is a 5K race, to be held at Sugarhouse Park on Nov. 21. Anyone is welcome to run the race.

The race begins at 9 a.m. For more information or to register online, CLICK HERE.

Besides Mountain View Elementary, Girls on the Run is also at Rowland Hall-St. Mark's, Backman Elementary, and Ensign Elementary. Programs are also scheduled for Spring 2010 in Whittier Elementary and McGillis Elementary.
