(Macomb, IL-AP) -- Former Western Illinois University President John Bernhard has died. He was 83.

Bernhard led W-I-U from 1968 to 1974. He died yesterday at his home in Michigan.

Bernhard was known for working with students on issues such as relaxing dress codes and establishing unsupervised housing for older students. He was president when the school built its golf course and presidential home.

Bernhard was an administrator at Brigham Young University. He also was a staff assistant to tycoon Howard Hughes and a Utah state senator.

He left W-I-U to become president of Western Michigan University and retired in 1985.

A memorial service is scheduled Saturday on campus in Kalamazoo.
