(Sandy-AP) -- Investigators say a Sandy man whose house went up in flames Monday died from the smoke.

Forty-six-year old Lane Thompson died of respiratory failure caused by the fire.

Three pets also died in the blaze.

The fire started just before three p-m Monday. It originated in a couch in the basement family room. Thompson was found dead in another room in the basement near the family room.

Investigators are still trying to figure out the cause.
