Four young bank robbers made off with some cash this morning, but they didn't get very far. Good team work and good luck came together today to foil a bank robbery. Now four 16-year-olds are in jail.
At about 11:20 a car was parked with two teens inside, ready to take off when their partners came out of the bank. Just old enough to drive, police say the teens moved on to armed bank robbery. Police say they held up a bank with a semi-automatic pistol.
The 911 call from a Wells-Fargo Bank on State Street was prompt and detailed.
Sgt. Michelle Burnette, Sandy Police Department: “There was a female that came in, layed a handgun on the counter, and required the tellers to give her the money."
The girl grabbed the money; she and another suspect left. They took off in a white Honda and headed north on State Street, but didn't get very far.
Bank employees gave police a good description of the car, with a license number. Two Midvale officers were a few blocks away.
Officer Doug McGrath, Midvale Police Department: “Started towards State Street. The vehicle pretty much crossed paths with me traveling northbound on State."
They caught up with the car at 80th South and State and pulled up behind it in the left turn lane. The Midvale officers say the driver thought about making a run for it, but all four teens gave up. Detectives came up with a backpack full of cash and a loaded semi-automatic pistol.
Officer Greg Wathen, Midvale Police Department: “It brings home the reality that we have to assume that the worst can always happen. We're always happy and grateful when things go as well as they did today."
The girl and three boys are all 16-year-olds from Kearns and West Valley.
