(Provo-AP) -- Processing inmates costs taxpayers, but the Utah County commission wants the cities to foot the bill instead.

The Utah County Commission voted unanimously to charge cities 50 dollars each time an inmate is booked into the Utah County Jail for an offense they could have been cited for. That means class B or class C misdemeanors.

Commissioners say it costs taxpayers 60 dollars each time a man or woman is processed into the jail. And they want to encourage officers to issue citations instead of taking them to an already overcrowded jail.

Commissioners say men and woman who are booked for serious crimes will still be accepted without the 50 dollar charge.
