Sandra Yi reportingAnother deadly day for kids and cars. A two-year-old Draper boy died in his driveway.
The boy's mother apparently didn't see him as she backed out of the driveway of their home.
It's common sense but police say they can't remind us enough. They say, when we back out, we need to take it slowly. We should always look over our shoulder and check our mirrors.
Judy Allred: "It could have just happened to anybody."
The neighborhood is saddened by the tragic accident. A little boy, killed in his driveway.
Sgt. Michael Beesley: "All indications were he was just outside playing."
Two-year-old Zach Doherty was hit by a truck. His mother was behind the wheel.
Sgt. Michael Beesley/ Draper Police Dept.: "She thought that she had hit something, immediately stopped the vehicle, got out and discovered the accident."
Police say it's unfortunate, but not uncommon.
Sgt. Michael Beesley: "What we're asking people, especially this time when the weather is getting warmer and children are out and about playing, be especially careful of what's going on behind you."
Their message to motorists is simple.
Sgt. Michael Beesley: "Always look over your shoulder, always check mirrors, always make sure visually that it's clear behind you before you back out."
Judy Allred: "We have to be double on the alert all the time."
Tonight, family members are left coping with a sudden loss. They say Zach's life was short but not without meaning.
Judy Allred/ Victim's Aunt: "He was a beautiful, beautiful, active child and very inquisitive. He added so much to our family."
Thursday, seven people, including children, were injured when they were hit by cars.
