(KSL News) -- Officials are trying to figure out what is on the water in a small Centerville canal.

The canal runs in an area just north of Parrish Lane along Pipeline road.

A passerby spotted the film last night, and called Chevron.

Company officials came and put out booms to catch the substance.

They also shut down the two pipelines running underneath the road.

Dan Johnson ChevronTexaco Public Affairs Manager: "When you get a report we take action to in fact make sure that the public is protected and that the environment is protected so we immediately shut down our pipeline."

This morning they dug a 100 foot trench around their pipeline to see if it was leaking, but it wasn't.

Officials now think the substance may have come from a Utah Power pole that was installed about 6 months ago.

They believe it may be lubricant used during the installation.
