Samantha Hayes reporting A woman is dead, her husband in critical condition, and their two children traumatized. Police say the children watched their parents overdose on drugs.

Neighbors say they don't know much about the couple that lives here at 375 West 500 North, except that they have two young children. It was the children who ran up the street to get help from neighbors.

Police say the parents, both in their mid twenties, overdosed on illegal drugs, probably heroin, at about 7 o'clock. Their two children, about 10 and 11 saw the needles and ran for help.

Lt. John Cardona, Salt Lake City Police: ”The children were in the house when the parents decided to engage in the drug activity. They found their parents unconscious...not breathing, they ran across the street to the neighbor’s house, called 911, then we showed up."

The mother died of the drug overdose and the father is in critical to serious condition in the hospital.

Police are conducting the usual checks to see if there is a history of drug use at this address and other information.

The children have been taken into custody with the Division of Child and Family Services for the time being.
