Sam Penrod ReportingIt was a close call for the pilot and his passenger of a small airplane. The plane crashed early this morning after clipping a tree during an emergency landing.
It looks like the plane simply ran out of gas-- it went down just a couple of miles short of the Provo Airport about 3:30 this morning. Both men, who are from Provo, are going to be just fine. They are lucky though, given badly their plane was damaged in the crash.
28-year old Ruston Pearce and 24-year old Shane Walker were on a flight that left last night from Emmett, Idaho. The two were planning to land at the Provo airport, and almost made it. They were just a couple of miles away when the plane ran out of fuel.
On the way down the plane's wing hit a tree, but they were able to make a crash landing in the Gammon Family alfalfa field.
Lt. Doug Edwards, Orem Police Dept.: “Very fortunate in that their injuries were not very serious. Both were talking. They used a cell phone to alert the police and get some help.”
The plane came close to the lake and also some power lines. It was very fortunate both people stayed conscious and were able to call 911. It could have been several hours before anyone would have noticed the plane had gone down.
Both crash victims were taken to Timpangos Hospital where they were treated and released. Investigators from the FAA are investigating the crash, but again, it appears the plane just ran out of gas.
