(Alta-AP) -- It's a dog-eat-dog world for potential pooch owners in Alta.
Residents in the mountain town of 370 need a license to own a dog and only three are up for grabs in this year's annual dog-license lottery.
Right now, only 39 residents have permanent licenses.
The only other way to get a dog in Alta is to persuade Mayor Bill Levitt to grant a temporary license. There's no limit on the number of temporary licenses issued, but it's up to Levitt's discretion and only 12 people have those.
The managers of the watershed for Salt Lake City say they'd like the number of dog owners to be smaller. But for now they'll make sure owners and visitors are educated on the importance of not polluting the watershed.
This year's drawing will be held at noon on May 3.
