SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Gov. Gary Herbert collected $1 million at a fundraising gala that donors paid as much as $50,000 to attend.
Nearly 2,000 people joined Herbert at the dinner Friday night in the Salt Palace's Grand Ballroom.
Past Utah governors have depended on money from the annual gala to boost their campaign war chests.
But State GOP Chairman Dave Hansen says Herbert likely set a record for the amount of cash collected at the event.
Herbert broke with former Gov. John Huntsman's tradition in his last few years in office of not accepting contributions of more than $10,000.
Herbert established sponsorship levels of $10,000, $25,000 and $50,000.
More than half of the $1 million Herbert raised came from deep-pocketed donors, including realtors, developers, construction firms and energy companies.
