SALT LAKE CITY -- A measure that would allow Utahns to include their pets in protective orders has cleared its first hurdle.

A House committee passed the bill today with a 12-to-0 vote. House Bill 342 would include pets in protective orders against violent spouses, boyfriends or girlfriends.

Representative Scott Wyatt --- a Logan Republican --- sponsored the legislation.

Under the bill -- a law enforcement officer is authorized to protect the person who filed the protective order while he or she gains possession of the animal from the defendant.

The measure is now headed to the full House.
