SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Republican gubernatorial candidate Nolan Karras named a former U.S. Congresswoman, Enid Greene, as his running mate Saturday.
Greene, 45, is vice-chair of the Republican Party of Utah and president of the D. Forrest & Gerda M. Greene Foundation.
"Enid's federal experience compliments my own experience in finance and state government," said Karras, the chairman of the state Board of Regents. "She has proven she is capable of being Governor in her own right."
Before winning the No. 2 post in the party last August, Greene's political career was brought down in 1995 by a financial scandal involving her ex-husband, Joe Waldholtz, who served 21 months in federal prison for bank, election and tax fraud.
Greene, her campaign committees and her father paid $100,000 in civil fines to the Federal Election Commission for campaign fraud violations she blamed on Waldholtz, who was accused of taking $4 million from her father's estate. Greene abandoned a run for a second term in Congress and divorced her husband following the scandal.
Karras, 59, made the announcement during the Salt Lake County Republican Convention at the Salt Palace.
