SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A father was jailed and his two children taken into state custody after he allegedly left them unattended to go to the hospital where their mother was delivering another baby.

Police believe the parents had been gone from the home since about 4 a.m. Thursday and the children, ages 5 and 3, showed up, crying, at a neighbor's home about 5:30 a.m.

Detective Phil Eslinger said officers went to the parents' apartment and found possible drug paraphernalia.

The father was booked for investigation of child neglect and child endangerment. The mother remained at the hospital.
