SPRINGVILLE -- Springville's longtime fire chief has died.

Phil Whitney joined Springville's fire department as a volunteer in 1977 and has been its first and only fire chief since 1985.

Whitney passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday morning at the age of 72.

Fellow firefighters say Whitney was a great leader and a dedicated public servant. Details on his funeral have not been announced.
