(Salt Lake City-AP) -- The baby left behind by a father who was running from police this week is in protective custody.

The baby's parents fled in an S-U-V Tuesday night when they were approached by police at a TRAX station parking lot. The pair jumped from the S-U-V during the police chase.

Police say they saw the man toss what looked like a backpack into some bushes as he ran, but it turned out to be the baby in the car seat.

The baby was uninjured and was returned to his mother after she was cited. But the Division of Child and Family Services took custody of the infant yesterday.

A hearing tomorrow will determine whether the boy will be returned to his mother.

The child's father is in the Salt Lake County Jail on a number of charges including child endangerment.
