HIDE YOURSELF AWAY

By Mary Jane Clark

If the name Mary Jane Clark sounds familiar to you, but not exactly, you may be confusing her with her former mother-in-law – Mary Higgins Clark. The younger Clark is only just beginning her career as a novelist, but I personally enjoyed her much more than her prolific former in-law.

I’ll admit that Hide Yourself Away is not remarkable in any way. It is a whodunit that you may or may not figure out, but it’s really entertaining reading. If you read for diversion, to take your mind off your day and your troubles, then this is a good one for you. If you read for literary quality or innovative techniques in fiction, then skip this one. As for me? I’ll read Mary Jane Clark again.

When she’s not writing mysteries, Clark is a producer and writer for CBS news, and her experience in a network newsroom comes into play in Hide Yourself Away. The main character in this novel, Grace Callahan, is an intern with a morning news program who is trying, like the other interns, to distinguish herself and land the one and only job on the staff. The insider tidbits about TV news are great. The characterization is thorough and catchy. It’s just a good read in which Clark sends you down several possible paths thinking you might know who the killer is before she puts her heroine in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A thumbs up for Mary Jane Clark’s latest bestseller, Hide Yourself Away. On the Book Beat for KSL Newsradio 1160, I’m Amanda Dickson.
