BLOW OUT

This was my first experience with Catherine Coulter, the best-selling author of the novels featuring the FBI husband and wife team of Sherlock and Savich. This one could have been good. It had real potential with the plot of the murder of a Supreme Court justice in the Court’s highly guarded library as its hook. While not original, the plot held some promise, but Coulter just didn’t pull it off for me.
Part of the problem is that the book opens with an other-worldly sub-plot that never made sense to me and never connected to the main plot. Then there is the problem of the villain. The villain should have been much more than he was. His motivation for the murders just left me thinking, “What? Are you kidding?” Even the FBI duo of Sherlock and Savich left me thinking they were as stereotypical as their character names.
Coulter fans tell me that her earlier novels are quite compelling. I can picture that because the possibility of a David Baldacci-like thriller was definitely here, she just doesn’t get there, and then she leaves you so unfulfilled.
I’m keeping an open mind about this author, but can’t recommend her latest bestseller in paperback – Blow Out by Catherine Coulter. On the Book Beat for KSL Newsradio 1160, I’m Amanda Dickson.
