THE ULTIMATE WEIGHT SOLUTION The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom By Dr. Phil McGraw
If the Dr. Philisms bug you, you may not be able to stomach this book. But if a few "this dog won't hunts" won't get in the way of learning something, then I do believe there is something here to learn.
I didn't start reading this book expecting to discover something I've never known before about weight loss. I'm not sure there is anything entirely new out there. I've always known that if you want to lose weight, you need to eat less and eat right and exercise more. What I was looking for was some new thinking and a little inspiration - and I found it in Dr. Phil's book.
I've read a lot of diet books - Atkins, South Beach, French Women Don't Get Fat - all of them, and there are good ideas in all of them. What I liked about Dr. Phil's book that is not in these others is that he is a psychologist and he talks about emotional and behavioral responses to food. For example, he suggests that you have some activities that are incompatible with eating ready to engage in the next time you want to overeat. So you can't gorge yourself on chocolate cake while you're in the bathtub. Or you can't dance to music while eating nachos (at least not very well) - so start dancing.
His ideas are simple, to be sure, but helpful - at least to me. His 7 keys to weight loss freedom include right thinking, healing feelings, a no fail environment, mastery over impulse eating, nutrition, intentional exercise, and a circle of support. I feel energized after reading the book. I even penciled in two running sessions this week. (Ask me next week how I did?)
So - if you already have to stand up twice to cast a shadow (a Dr. Philism), then this book is not for you. But if you're trying to lose 10 or 100 pounds - I recommend Dr. Phil's The Ultimate Weight Solution. What do you have to lose? On the Book Beat for KSL Newsradio, I'm Amanda Dickson.
