Tonya Papanikolas Reporting The Davis School District is asking for the public's help in naming its new high school. The district already has 650 suggestions and expects to surpass 1,000 by the middle of the week.

Construction crews are hard at work building high school #8 in Davis County.

Bryan Turner, Director of Architectural Services: "We're probably about 85% complete right now."

While builders work on the structure of the school, the district is trying to come up with a name, mascot and colors. They're getting a lot of public input.

Connie Bohn, Kids Submitting Ideas: "Syracuse Sorcerers, and that was a wizard, and they had the Syracuse Serpents."

Of course, adults have ideas, too.

Michael Christensen: "Just brine shrimp, I guess. That would be a good mascot."

It's not the first time that's been suggested. The school district says they've received ideas for:

  • The Fighting Brine Shrimp
  • Screaming Seagulls
  • Fighting Crickets
  • Salt Makers
  • Swamp Monsters

Chris Williams: "Mastadons is a pretty cool name."

Chris Williams submitted his idea of the prehistoric elephant that roamed the shores of Lake Bonneville thousands of years ago. And don't rule him out; he's named a school's mascot in Idaho.

Chris Williams: "It's time for me to name another mascot."

The most popular mascot suggestions have to do with animals that reflect the area, like antelope, buffalos and bison. A lot of suggestions for school's names have to do with the nearby Great Salt Lake.

Chris Williams: "Lakeview, Lakeshore, Lakeside, any derivative of a lake."

Other popular names so far include:

  • Island View High
  • West View High
  • Sandridge High
  • Legacy High
  • Syracuse High

Holly Warlaumont, Wants School Named after City: "There's Layton High, Clearfield High, why not Syracuse?"

Tyler Maddox, Wants School Named after City: "I just think it should be called Syracuse High; that just makes the most sense to me."

Administrators at the school will choose the top five suggestions. Students will narrow it down to 3, and then the school board will make the final decision.

The public has until Wednesday to send in ideas. To submit your idea, click on the link on the link provided.
